“When it comes to the blues, it seems like there are two different camps -- those who are staunch authentic blues enthusiasts, and those who like their blues amped up with a decidedly rock approach. On his 1994 live release, No Mercy, singer/guitarist Bernard Allison certainly falls under the latter category. As with the majority of modern-day blues-rockers, Allison focuses mostly on covers of vintage blues tunes, with the odd original (or more accurately, one lone original -- "Next Generation") thrown in for good measure. With Allison backed by a group of studio pros, No Mercy captures blues at its most well-honed -- the complete opposite of the grittiness of the original bluesmen -- especially on such tracks as the album-opening "Rock Me Baby" and "Breakin' Up Somebody's Home." Also included are a pair of tributes to Bernard's father, Luther Allison ("Change Your Way of Living" and "Help") as well as a reading of "Tin Pan Alley," which is very reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan's version (on his classic Couldn't Stand the Weather release). If you're an admirer of modern-day blues-rock, then No Mercy is certainly worth a spin.”

“This Album is The Best Ever American Propgressive Music, challenged only by its follow up album "Open Up" and sadly last offering from Wil Sharpe and Friends. ironically, This is filled with quite The English Inspiration side of Prog, formed by all of the usual suspects. But the main Sound here is King Crimsonesque, Some Camel, and a wacky Gentle Giant approach, especially with The Spirit Of Music and its quite funny sound scapes, courtesy of Mini Moog. The opening of this album has possibly the finest Mini Moog solo I've heard ever in my life. The use of both Pitch and Modulation is Superb. Even gives Jan Hammer a run for the money. L.Duncan Hammond was sorely missed on Open Up LP, But Michael Poncek did keep up the strength of the Keys on his own quite well.”

Shhhlap! is more of a public service than anything new -- a two-fer of the albums Shhh and Slap! Both have their significance in the Chumbawamba canon, marking a turning away from their outright punk past and into a more individual, modern sound; bringing out the innate humor and wordplay that's been one of their trademarks ever since. Shhh is a decidedly cynical look at the music business; the album that appeared after their projected music business take, "Jesus H. Christ", was unable to happen because no one would grant licenses for the use of samples -- Shhh being a reference to being gagged.

The debut album by George Thorogood and the Destroyers exploded onto the FM airwaves in 1977, bringing a dose of hard-driving roots reality back to rock radio; his versions of Bo Diddley's 'Who Do You Love' and John Lee Hooker's 'One Bourbon One Scotch and One Beer' resonated throughout the years. Beginning his career as a solo act, Thorogood soon added drummer Jeff Simon and guitarist Ron Smith, and it was with this ensemble that George initially cut his first record a sound that was even more raw than the final version of the album, with George's propulsive performance, backed only by Jeff's ferocious drumming and Ron's steady low-strings-on-the-guitar underpinning.
