Like a lot of the diagonal musical career moves I’ve made, working with Lisa came about indirectly from a Robert Wyatt connection. Robert wrote some lyrics for a Russian tune. I liked his lyrics but bigheadedly reckoned I could write a more interesting tune. In the end, the only part of the lyrics that remained was the title and first two lines: HALF THE TIME it's pantomime/ Half the time it’s only make believe... Then Eccentric Streatham Guitarist Mark Hewins wrote some completely different words and asked Lisa to sing the song for a demo. I was immediately knocked out by the sound of her voice and the fact she could sing the notes right - it wasn't a particularly simple tune.
